HISTORY OF EAST COMMERCE BAPTIST CHURCH

On May 16,1956 at a business meeting at First Baptist Church they voted to purchase property on which to start a mission. This was under our Pastor Carl Allen. After he left, Grant Jones became Pastor and appointed a Mission Committee which purchased the land on East Commerce where we are still located today. Our first Sunday at East Commerce was on January 4, 1959, as a mission and became a Church on September 27, 1959.

William Stockton became the first Pastor and stayed until 1963. While he was Pastor the chairs in the auditorium were replaced with pews. In March 1964 James Hutson became the Pastor. On October 24, 1965, the church decided to raise money to build an educational building. Reverend James Hutson resigned in December 1967.

On May 19,1968 Reverend James Owens became our Pastor. During the time he was here the church installed a baptistry and purchased an organ. Reverend Owens resigned in January 1972. On August 6,1972, Reverend Murry Mathis became our Pastor. Under his leadership we started a bus ministry. On Febuary 10,1974,the church voted to remodel the auditorium. Brother Mathis resigned Octember 12,1976. On April 3,1977, Reverend Carl Price became our Pastor. On September 12, 1979, the church voted to pave the parking lot adding additional space and bringing the drive way around the building to the road in front of the church. Reverend Price resigned on March 25 1984. Reverend James Hickey became our Pastor on March 2 1986 and he has served our church for twenty three years.

During these years, total church membership has grown from around 400 to just over 800. Two building projects have been completed with the last being an enlargement of the church worship center three years ago which doubled the seating space.

The church is heavily involved in ministry and missions including ministry to children, youth, and adults. A ladies and men's jail ministry was begun and this has been very successful on a weekly basis. Divorce Care ministry is made available to the community during two semesters each year. A Hispanic Church has been started which meets weekly and prior to that English As Seccond Language classes have been provided for the past five years. Adults are involved in a ministry of outreach though FAITH visitation.
